President of Vietnam attended High-level General Debate of 80th Session of UN General Assembly

On September 23th morning, local time, at the Headquaters of the United Nations in New York, America, the High-level General Debate of 80th Session of the United Nations (UN) was opened.

Attending the session were 150 Heads of States, Heads of Governments. High representatives of many member states and leaders of international and regional organizations. President Luong Cuong headed the Vietnamese high-level delegation attending the Session.

Reporting on the global situation and activities of the UN, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres assumed that the globe is heading towards a multipolar world and needs to build an efficient multilateral system to prevent from making the mistakes leading to the First World War twice.

Mr. Guterres emphasized, UN is an ethical guideline, a peace maintaining and international law protecting force, promoting sustainable development, ensuring human rights, and realizing global policies.

The Secretary General emphasized that in today’s context, the international community has to make right decisions regarding 5 issues. Firstly, peace needs to be in accordance with international law. Secondly, it is of significant to ensure human rights and dignity by implementing international commitments on human rights, including through promoting resource mobility, renewing international financial systems in order to continue implementing sustainable development goals.

Thirdly, it is vital to boost climate justice and climate action, through transforming sustainable energy and justice and ensuring resources for green climate through financial mechanisms and policies. Fourthly, it is important to utilize, make use of advanced technology, artificial intelligence to serve the development of the world and humans. Fifthly, it is essential to build a comprehensive UN, which is more transparency and willing for the 21th century, including passing the UN80 Initiative, amending the 2026 budget to promote accountability, enhance supplying and reduce expenses.

President of the 80th Session UN General Assembly – Annalena Baerbok spoke highly of achievements that UN has gained in assisting the international community for 80 years. Mrs. Baerbok reaffirmed the importance of UN in the international multilateral system and highlighted that the power of the UN Charter relies on the compliance of member states to the Charter; about gender equality, Mrs. Baerbok call for soon election of a women as an UN Secretary General.

Addressing the session, Brazilian President Lula da Silva said, the international community has to reorganize their priorities, including reducing expenses on military and promoting financial resources for sustainable development.

For his part, American President Donald Trump said that the UN is an organization with potentials. However, there are still many remaining concerns. For the America, President Donald Trump affirmed that it has gained many achievements in internal and foreign affairs, including assisting to resolve 7 conflicts in the world, reaching tax agreements with countries, comprising Vietnam. Furthermore, he emphasized the need to end the conflict in Gaza.

Meanwhile, many High-ranking Leaders of countries said that the world is facing unprecedented challenges, expressed strong support for the central role of the UN in the multilateral system, upholding international law, reforming the UN to respond to challenges that has never happened before, promoting international cooperation, mobilizing financial resources, especially green finance, cooperation and sharing science – technology advancements.
