Applying biotechnology for sustainable development in a new era

Overview of the conference

Speaking at the event, Mr. Le Thanh Tung – Director of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Department for S&T Knowledge Popularization acknowledged that in the context of the 4.0 industrial revolution, biotechnology is not only a growth driver but also the key for Vietnam to affirm its position, towards the goal of becoming the region’s top biotechnology center and reach the global level. The workshop creates an important platform for scientists, management agencies and businesses to share experiences, recommend resolutions to utilize biotechnology in practical production and daily life. This does not only contribute to the efficiency in agriculture, industry and environment protecting practices, but also help the local people to adapt flexibly to challenges, towards the sustainable development goal.

The major report of the workshop is on scientific research results and technological development in the biotechnology field in Quang Tri province in the period of 2020 - 2025 and orientation of the period of 2026 – 2030. Participants ‘s ideas, comments and opinions relating to the biotechnology field were also presented at the workshop. Some of the remarkable resolutions presented are: Application of microbial preparations in organic agriculture and aquaculture; research on microbial organic fertilizers for rice-earthworm farming models; biological wastewater treatment technology; development of sustainable ecological agriculture; biofloc technology based on indigenous microbial sources in white-leg shrimp farming; application of science and technology in research and selection of new rice varieties; tissue culture technology in propagation of some medicinal plants, ornamental flowers and plants; orientation for the development of biotechnology in Quang Tri province and the region in the coming time....

According to PhD Tran Van Tuan - President of the Quang Tri Union of Science and Technology Associations, the Communist Party and the State of Vietnam have introduced many policies to promote the application and development of biotechnology in socio-economic sectors. Resolution Number 36-NQ/TW of January 30, 2023 of the Politburo on developing and applying biotechnology to the year of 2030, with the vision to the year of 2045 has opened a new comprehensive strategy, defining biotechnology development as a national key economic - technical sector. Scientific research and the application of biotechnology in Quang Tri province should be innovated and comprehensively changed, in accordance with the Resolution Number 57-NQ/TW on December 22 2024 of the Politburo about scientific and technological development breakthrough, innovation and national digital transformation: Resolution Number 71/NQ-CP on April 01 2025 of the Government amended the action plan of the Government to implement the Resolution Number 57-NQ/TW on December 22 2024 of the Politburo on scientific and technological development breakthrough, innovation and national digital transformation.

Over the previous time, research and application of biotechnology in Quang Tri province have been implemented by sectors and localities and achieved some results. Biotechnology research - development centers, laboratories and local businesses have met the demand of production, and gained the ability to learn selectively regarding technological scientific achievements on biotechnology and step by step applied according to provincial contexts. Especially in the agricultural field, the application of biotechnology in plant and animal breeding has had remarkable achievements in transforming the structure of crops and livestock, and producing forestry varieties using tissue culture technology, improving the quality of forestry varieties. The application of biotechnology to produce organic microbial fertilizers, the application of E.M. products to treat environmental pollution, the testing of pest control for crops, livestock and aquatic products, the application of biogas models to build biogas tanks have been widely used... contributing significantly to promoting the development of agricultural, forestry and fishery production. Step by step efficiently applying biotechnology in industrial production, specially processing industry, environment protection, pest control, and residents' health care.

PhD Tran Van Tuan affirmed that statements had clarified information that biotechnology is one of the key science and technology fields, playing an important role in the industrialization, modernization of Vietnam, in the context of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
