Vietnam proposes 6 priorities contents at the 2023 P4G Summit

At the closing session of Partnership for Green Growth and Global Goals 2030 (P4G) Summit in Bogota city, Colombia on September 23, 2023, Vietnam proposed 6 partnership cooperations to contribute to common global efforts.

On behalf of the Government of Vietnam, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh stated the proposed contents for promoting P4G as Vietnam hosts the fourth P4G Summit in 2025.

Vietnam will work to ensure the next summit’s agenda matches the P4G countries’ priorities and global concerns, including food security and poverty reduction, management and sustainable use of cross-border water resources, the building and operation of early warning systems and the monitoring of climate change impacts, finance for efforts towards net zero emissions and just energy transition, carbon smart agriculture, and a circular economy for plastics which contributing to the implementation of the Global Agreement on Plastic Pollution.

Speaking at the closing session, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh emphasized that this year's Conference takes place at the right time in the context of the world is halfway to implementing the 2030 Agenda and dual crisis caused by climate change, environmental pollution and biodiversity loss are posing many challenges to achieving sustainable development goals in the remaining half of the road.

Vietnam is a founding country of P4G and a member of the Global Green Growth Forum (3GF), the predecessor of the P4G Forum. This enables Vietnam to actively participated, take responsibility and closely coordinate with members to promote the Forum's agenda, vision and mission as the only public-private green growth forum globally with the goal of realizing global goals for sustainable development, green transformation and response to climate change.

The Minister emphasized that, from experience in implementing partnership activities for green growth and global goals since 2011, along with high determination as agreed in Bogota, countries and partner organizations will develop a substantive and effective partnerships, mobilizing the full participation of all parties, especially the business sector, thereby contributing to a sustainable and prosperous future for everyone.

At the same time, the Minister also informed the Conference of Vietnam's efforts in promoting green growth, developing a circular economy, and implementing the zero emissions target by 2050 with the motto of the green transition needs to be implemented in a balanced, just, harmonious, and reasonable manner, people-centered approach, contributing to a peaceful, sustainable, and prosperous future world. The priority of the process is to complete the legal framework for green growth, digital transformation and accelerate energy transition.

With a spirit of determination and action, right after COP26, Vietnam issued action plans to promptly implement commitments with a specific roadmap, including: Plan to implement commitments; National Strategy on Climate Change, National Action Plan on Green Growth; Methane Reduction Action Plan; Action program for green energy transition, reducing carbon and methane emissions in the transportation sector; Sustainable forestry development program; National plan to implement the Glasgow Declaration on forests and land use.

Vietnam became one of the first three developing countries in the world joined the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with the Group of International Partners with very ambitious goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developing renewable energy to replace coal thermal power, said Khanh.

As assigned by the Prime Minister, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh, on behalf of the Vietnamese Government, attended the Summit of the Partnership Forum for Green Growth and Global Goals 2030 (P4G) with theme “Transformation Partners for Sustainability”.

Director of the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Dinh Tho spoke at the sustainable city session; Director of the Department of Climate Change Tang The Cuong shared at the discussion session on the roadmap to achieve the net zero emissions target, equitable energy transition and carbon market development in Vietnam.

Assessment of the current situation and proposed solutions to mitigate the impacts of open burning in Vietnam
Despite 68% of surveyed individuals expressing environmental awareness and 80% acknowledging health concerns, a significant portion still plans to continue "field burning" (open burning in agriculture).
