VUSTA leaders attended the AFEO Midterm Meeting 23

Singapore – the AFEO Midterm Meeting 23 was hosted by S’porean Institute of Engineers (IES) as of July 11 to 14, 2024.

The Meeting connected some 500 delegates who were ASEAN engineering employees and fosters gathering to meet up, to talk and to share technical innovations and solutions for the well-beings of ASEAN community.

The agenda of safety of boilers, building, constructions, electrics, manufacturing as well as engineering education and training, disaster response work and energy were discussed in depth amongst the professionals at committees. Besides, the engineer participants also took part in symposium of fostering, awarding excellent women and young engineers, construction sites, firefighting showcasing and smart innovative safety solutions which was framed in the Meeting.

VUSTA Sec. Gen Nguyen Quyet Chien led a 3-member team to join most of Midterm Committee meetings and events. At the Board Meeting gathering, the most powerful AFEO apparatus, Chien updated the counterparts with successfully 87 AER registered for 2023 enlarging the total number of Vietnamese AER branded engineers of 639 to date. To enable the above said, the VUSTA entrusted bodies at national and local level, has driven series of roadshows to the to- be- gained benefits from being AER engineers. Stung by the effort, the VUSTA disciplines associations joined the educational colleges and vocational training institutions to conduct the thematic workshops and training courses for associate engineers nationwide.

It is foreseen that the VUSTA shall prompt its vital roles in elevating the competencies of Vietnamese AER engineers, especially the junior and female approaching to the APEC standardization. To that purpose, numerous matchup events are planned to close up the Vietnamese engineering community to the international arena in 2025, for instance, organizing the 2025 Young Engineers Forum is framed in the Midterm Meeting 24 tentatively held by VUSTA in a coastal city of Central part of Viet Nam.

The VUSTA delegates also teamed up with others to take technical visits at the Semcorp Floating Solar Farm which was launched by S’pore PM Lee Hsien Loong 2 years ago.  The farm, generating on grid 60 MW a year, is a good practice to harmonise the wildlife conservation and economic development by covering one third of the biggest freshwater reservoir in the area of Tuas. In this occasion, the ASEAN guests also witnessed the smart engineering work the local juniors at the IES patronagedd Engineering Innovation Challenge and National Engineers Day.

Literally, the Midterm Meeting was to review the first half AFEO work since the last CAFEO and to develop the agenda for the next one by the end of the same years. In that spirit, the Institute of Engineers Malaysia shall host the CAFEO 42 as of October 22 – 24, 2024 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia and envisage to accommodate over 1000 participants, 5000 trade partners and 200 exhibits in this festival.

The Center for Capacity Building, Support for Women and Children (CSWC) shared the outcomes of the Project
On March 28, 2025, CSWC , in collaboration with Planète Enfants & Développement (PE&D), organized the closing conference of the project “Joining hands to support the prevention system of children trafficking in Southern and Central Vietnam”. The project was approved and overseen by VUSTA, and implemented from 2022 to 2024 in Ho Chi Minh City and Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province.

Assessment of the current situation and proposed solutions to mitigate the impacts of open burning in Vietnam
Despite 68% of surveyed individuals expressing environmental awareness and 80% acknowledging health concerns, a significant portion still plans to continue "field burning" (open burning in agriculture). The primary justification lies in the perception that it is effective, fast, and inexpensive. This highlights the urgent need for targeted communication strategies to alter such practices.
