The 1st World Conference on Science Literacy 2018 was inaugurated on 17 September 2018, hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) with the collaborative support of the International Science Council (ISC), UNESCO, World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Nearly 2000 delegates from 20 international scientific organizations, 58 national science societies from 38 countries around the globe attended the Conference. Professor Dr.Sc. Dang Vu Minh, President of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) attended and delivered the remarks at the plenary session on the theme of “ Science Literacy Promotion and Scientists’ Responsibilities”.

With the theme of “Science Literacy for a Better Shared Future of Mankind”, the World Conference became the good platform for the scientists to share ideas and experiences in promoting public science literacy, as well as to encourage the global science and technology community to respond to future challenges and opportunities through advancing public science literacy, and to ensure an equitable share of science and technology advancement among nations and peoples.

Being drawn with special attention, HE. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China has sent a congratulatory letter to the World Conference stressing science and technology (S&T) and science literacy popularization play pivotal role in advancing openness and cooperation between countries for a shared future of the humankinds. Xi stressed that China had been active in exchanging ideas with other countries on promoting science literacy as well as enhancing the role of scientists and science literacy diffusers.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also sent a congratulatory letter to the conference looking  forward to building consensus and fostering international and global cooperation on establishing a shared platform for the promotion of public science literacy as a means of realizing the sustainable development goals.

The World Conference was held on 17 – 20 September 2018 with plenary forum, panel discussions and 32 parallel sessions discussing of numerous key issues on science technology proliferation, linkage of the science literacy diffusing work and the SDGs, climate change response, food security and code of ethics in scientific activities.
