Tien Giang: Workshop on the role of green economy, circular economy for sustainable development

On June 28, the workshop on the role of green economy, circular economy with the goal of sustainable development was organized by the People's Committee of Tien Giang province.

The Union of Science and Technology Associations, Department of Industry and Trade and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development jointly prepared contents of the workshop.

The seminar attracted many experts and scientists from institutes and universities within and around the province, representatives of leaders of provincial departments, agencies and branches at district level, representatives of enterprises, cooperatives in agriculture and industry and trade.

Mr. Luu Van Phi, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade emphasized that, over the past time, Tien Giang province has implemented a number of green and ecological sustainable agricultural models, which have created a spillover effect, attracting many organizations, businesses and people to participate. Models applied and replicated such as: Breeding model applying VietGAP, waste treatment in pig production with biogas tunnels as fuel or used for running generators, model of raising worms to make use of agricultural by-products and wastes (pork manure, cow dung, straw, water hyacinth, etc.) into useful products according to the principles of the circular economy. The industry and trade sector is promoting the implementation of the program on economical and efficient use of energy, applying cleaner production processes, advising the Provincial People's Committee to develop a plan to implement Resolution 55-NQ/TW of the Central Committee on orientation of National Energy Development Strategy through 2030, with a vision to 2045. Besides that, some processing industries have maximized by-products and waste products (shrimp head, shrimp shell, pangasius skin and fat…) in order to create added value as well as to protect environment.

Scientists and experts also shared many topics related to green economy, circular economy, and circular agriculture including approaching the knowledge circular economy to apply into the fields of agriculture, industry and services in Tien Giang province; reducing greenhouse gas emissions and carbon credits in agricultural production; solutions to develop sustainable agricutural circular farming for Tien Giang and the Mekong Delta; a number of research results and solutions to promote the circular economy in fruit tree production in the southern provinces…

In conclusion of the seminar, Mr. Pham Van Trong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee highly appreciated the presentations and valued discussions of experts, scientists and management agencies which are practical and enthusiastic opinions. He suggested the related agencies absorb and apply the solutions, initiatives and suggestions of the scientists and experts to the actual conditions of the province. Mr. Pham Van Trong also suggested that state management agencies, the Fatherland Front and mass organizations need to uphold their roles and responsibilities, especially in communicating and raising awareness for people and the community about the role of green economy, circular economy.

He also proposed that after this workshop, the Union of Science and Technology Associations and relevant departments and agencies advise the Provincial People's Committee to have a focus plan on developing green economy, circular economy; develop a set of criteria on green economy, circular economy; related industries, agencies and organizations also need to propose to organize some more specialized seminars on green economy and circular economy in the field of environment such as: collection, classification and treatment of domestic waste, waste from agricultural materials, the application of water-burning technology as the mentioned in the discussion session.
