The sixth National Congress of Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations

On April 27-28, 2010, the 6th National Congress of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (2010-2015 term) was solemnly held in Hanoi.

Attending the Congress was Mr. Truong Tan Sang, member of Political Bureau and Executive Secretary of CPV Central Committee; Mr. Ho Duc Viet, member of Political Bureau, Secretary of CPV Central Committee, Chairman of Central Organizing Committee; Mr. To Huy Rua, member of Political Bureau Secretary of CPV Central Committee, Chairman of Central Propaganda Committee; Mr. Le Kha Phieu, former General Secretary of the Party; Mr. Huynh Dam, member of the Party Central Committee and Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front; Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, member of the Party Central Committee and Deputy Prime Minister; and representatives of many ministries, departments, and organizations. The Congress attracted 677 delegates representing 125 member associations (including 55 provincial-level member associations and 70 national-level member associations, including 4 central associations with over 80 member associations operating nationwide). Resolution No. 27-NQ/TW of the 7th Central Party Committee Conference (10th term) on August 6, 2008 "On building a team of intellectuals in the period of promoting industrialization and modernization of the country" confirmed: "In every era, knowledge is always the foundation of social progress, intellectuals are the main force for creating and disseminating knowledge. With the rapid development of the scientific and modern technological revolution today, intellectuals have become an especially important resource in the formation and development of the knowledge economy serving socio-economic and creating the strength in the development of each country. The goal to bring our country escaping underdeveloped, and basically becoming an industrialized country by 2020 that requires a shortened development path, the maximization of resources, the intellectual potential, especially the creative capacity of intellectuals."

To achieve that goal, the team of intellectuals in general and VUSTA in particular had a very important role and position in uniting, gathering, and motivating the intellectuals and members to promote the tradition of Vietnamese intellectuals, contributing to building and protecting the country.

The Congress approved the report on the activities of VUSTA in the fifth term (2004-2009) and the orientation of activities in the sixth term (2010-2015), the report on the activities of the Inspection Committee in the fifth term (2004-2009) and the oriented tasks and missions in the sixth term (2010-2015), the report on the performance of the Standing Committee and Central Council of VUSTA in the fifth term (2004-2009), the report on the explanation made by the Standing Committee regarding the amendments and supplements to the Charter of VUSTA, the approval of the basic content of the revised Charter, and the submission to the Central Council of the sixth term, based on Directive No. 42-CT/TW dated April 16, 2010 of the Politburo, Announcement No. 329/TB-TW dated April 26, 2010 of the Party Central Committee's Secretariat for further improvement, and the development strategy of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations in the period 2010-2020. The Congress elected a Central Council of the sixth term comprising 144 members.

At the first session, the Central Council elected a Standing Committee consisting of 23 members, Dr. Dang Vu Minh, member of the Party Central Committee and member of the Standing Committee of National Assembly, Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee on Science, Technology and Environment, as President. The three Vice President were Dr. Vu Ngoc Hoang, member of the Party Central Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Party Central Committee's Propaganda Committee; Professor Dr. Ho Uy Liem, Acting President of VUSTA in the fifth term; and Dr. Tran Viet Hung, Vice President and Secretary General of the Vietnam Association of Mechanical Industry. Dr. Pham Van Tan continued to hold the position of Secretary General in the sixth term. The Central Council also elected a nine-member Inspection Committee, with Dr. Tran Viet Hung as Chairman.

Green Forest Program to launch in 2024
To celebrate World Environment Day (June 5th), VUSTA and the Center for People and Nature (PanNature) coordinated with the local authority to hold a launching ceremony for the 2024 Green Forest Program on the morning of June 2nd (2024). The program aims to restore 10 hectares of forest in Van Ho (Son La) and 15 in Hang Kia - Pa Co Nature Reserve.
