Viet Nature Conservation Centre to expand the project site to the Phong Dien Nature Reserve

Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) gave green light to expand one more site of the project Reforestation of war devastated land to Phong Dien Nature Reserve, Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam. The project is owned by Viet Nature Conservation Centre and funded by Maeda Corporation (Japan) and World Land Trust (UK) with a total cost of US $1.544.991. The project life covers 7 years period from 2019 to 2026. The purpose is to assist the Bac Huong Hoa and Phong Dien Nature Reserve to reforest the war-devastated barren land in the nature reserve for enhanced ecosystem services, biodiversity and local livelihoods improvement.

At first, the project site was just Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve, Quang Tri province. However, due to unforeseen Covid-19 pandemic widespread and historical flooding in the central part of Viet Nam in 2020 which severely affected to the project schedule resulting to the insufficient care and protection of planted forest as expected. Having had a thoughtful consideration of the demand forest restoration as well as potential partners’ capacity in Thua Thien Hue province (Phong Dien natural reserve and Thuan Thien sustainable forestry cooperative), World Land Trust and Viet Nature decided to expand project site to Phong Dien natural reserve.

The Phong Dien natural reserve meets all project’s setforth criteria of the reforestation site specifically sharing ecosystem area with Bac Huong Hoa nature reserve and the severe agent orange affected area with more than 3,000 ha bare lands that need restoring by utilizing native tree species and shrubs, and being special use forest that enables the long term exist and development of forest restoration. In addition, the reforestation taking native tree species is expected to increase forest coverage, biodiversity conservation, and soil erosion control. These above mentioned factors are completely consistent with the local government’s guidelines, policies and solutions.

One of the aforementioned solutions is to mobilize resources from community through funding or directly supporting from NGOs and individual sponsors… Therefore, Viet Nature Conservation Centre have consulted with World Land Trust, the donor and coordinated with the Phong Dien Nature Reserve Management Board to undertake native trees planting campaign in the land of 20 hectares in the Phong My commune.
