MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS INDONESIA (PII)
ASEAN Countries including Indonesia have recently been focusing on combating Covid-19 while at the same time recover our economies. Indonesian Government have budgeted USD 48 Billion for medical, corporate financing, social security, business incentives, micro, small & medium enterprise and ministrial/institution and local government.
During pandemic, PII makes some contributions to the community, including installation of air and surface sterilization technology, Ozone Nano-mist at Jakarta public transports such as Busway, MRT, LRT and Commuter Trains, emergency ventilator development, distribution of thousands of face masks and hand sanitizers. PII also innovates face masks made from local fabrics combination with filtration efficiency equal to N95 medical masks.
PII initiated an online Focus Group Discussions followed by serial of Webinars and joint expert discussion with PWC involving more than 400 participants to publish a book “Re-designing Indonesia, an Engineer’s View”. The book is an in-depth reflection, re-imagination, and reform over 26 engineering sectors before, during and after the pandemic.
Transformation across the entire engineering value chain in preparing globally standard engineers is one of the center points of the book’s recommendation. As mandated by the new Engineering Laws, PII new roles as both institution of engineers and register body include accreditation of engineering education, PE certification and registration, international recognition and development of national engineering data base and competency mapping.
As President of AEESEAP, PII hosted the 2020 AEESEAP Workshop and Council meeting with the theme Enhancing Engineering Value Chain involving 1500 participants from various countries across the world. AEESEAP calls for a global coopetition, cooperation among competitors to produce vaccine in tackling global pandemic. AEESEAP also emphasizes achieving SDG requires global collaboration of engineers for which standardization of engineering education and PE competency are pre-requisite. Digital platform for such collaboration is proposed.
As a member of AFEO, PII urges further collaboration of engineers in ASEAN, an important region with its 60% working class population and 10 new unicorns, to win technological competition at a higher level. PII wishes AFEO become an arena for fostering digital transformation in the region where digital technologies such as Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), Sensor-based Technology, Geographic information Systems (GIS), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mobile Technology are the key drivers.
